Divisional Commissioner SM Humayun Kabir Sarkar has stated that the reports claiming six people died in a stampede at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital are incorrect.

He shared this information during a briefing with journalists at 12:30 AM on Monday (September 14).

Humayun Kabir clarified that the report of six deaths caused by a stampede is false. The two bodies found in the emergency department were of patients who died from natural causes. Reports regarding the deaths of two other individuals are currently being investigated.

Additionally, at 1:00 AM, MP AB Wahab Akand Wahid, Member Secretary of the hospital’s governing body, briefed journalists, stating that the media reports claiming six deaths due to a stampede were completely untrue. One woman named Jahanara, who appeared on the list of the deceased, is actually still admitted to the hospital. The other two individuals died as regular patients. Therefore, the news of deaths caused by a stampede is baseless.

Earlier, confusion had arisen regarding reports of six deaths due to a stampede following a fire incident at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. News of the six deaths had circulated widely on social media and in several media outlets.

It is worth noting that around 5:45 PM on Monday (September 14), a fire broke out in a malfunctioning elevator in the new building of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, destroying the elevator’s components up to the eighth floor. At least 20 people were injured while rushing to evacuate the building.

Upon receiving the report, four units—three from the Mymensingh Sadar Fire Service and one from Bangladesh Agricultural University—brought the fire under control within an hour. Following news of the fire, patients and their relatives inside the eight-story new building rushed out onto the street. Security personnel assisted in safely evacuating women and children during the chaos.
