The government has taken initiative to vaccinate girls with human papilloma virus (HPV) to prevent cervical cancer. As a part of this, this program is starting from Thursday (October 24) in Sylhet Division. Last year, for the first time, the government started offering free HPV vaccination. In the first phase, this program was conducted only in Dhaka Division. The second phase of vaccination program is going to start this year. Apart from Dhaka, 10 to 14-year-old girls of all districts, upazilas, city corporations and municipalities of Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions can take this vaccination.

The guests at the advocacy meeting said that cervical cancer is a deadly preventable disease caused by human papilloma virus. This disease is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Bangladesh. The success of this campaign is not only to prevent cervical cancer, but it is a big step towards eradicating the disease from Bangladesh by 2030.

The speakers in the meeting also said that the government has taken the initiative to provide free vaccination to girls studying in 5th to 9th class to prevent cervical cancer. Apart from this, 10 to 14-year-old girls outside educational institutions will also be given this vaccination at the nearest vaccination centers.
