Jubair Rahman Chowdhury, the senior judge of the Appellate Division, is the head of the search committee for the formation of the new Election Commission (EC). At the same time, Senior High Court Judge AKM Asaduzzaman has been nominated as a member of the committee. After Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed recommended the names of these two judges of the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court administration sent them to the cabinet department.
The President formed the search committee in accordance with the law regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners passed by the National Parliament. A six-member committee was formed under the leadership of a judge of the Appellate Division.
The search committee will propose the names of 10 people to form the EC considering the qualifications and disqualifications mentioned in the law. The President formed a new election commission with five people from among them.
The six-member search committee is chaired by an Appellate Division judge nominated by the Chief Justice. The members are a Judge of the High Court Division nominated by the Chief Justice, the Auditor General and Comptroller, the Chairman of the Public Works Commission and two eminent citizens nominated by the President. One of these two distinguished citizens will be a woman.
The Cabinet Department will provide secretarial support to the work of the search committee. There is a provision to recommend the names of 10 people and submit them to the President within 15 working days of the formation of the committee.
