The newly elected US President Donald Trump will be sworn in on January 20. Before that, the country’s universities have instructed their foreign students to return to campus. Because the Trump administration may issue new instructions on higher education and immigration policies. This may put students and workers outside the United States in trouble. News NDTV

Trump has already announced that he will issue several executive orders on economic and immigration issues once he is in power. Earlier, Trump took a tough stance on immigration policy for the first time in power. Even a travel ban was issued in the country.

According to the US Department of State, Educational and Cultural Bureau and the Institute of International Education, 54 percent of the total foreign students in the United States are from India and China. In the 2023-24 session, there are 3 lakh 31 thousand 602 Indian students in the United States. And there are 2 lakh 77 thousand 398 Chinese students.

David Elwell, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Office of International Students, expressed concern on social media that the Trump administration’s policy could affect the travel and visa processes of foreign students. Therefore, students who are outside the United States during winter break should return to campus quickly. Because the new policy may delay the visa process. The Office of Global Affairs at the University of Massachusetts has also given the same advice. They said that it would be safest for students to be present in the United States before Trump’s inauguration.

Former US President Donald Trump gave a message to tighten immigration policies during the election campaign. He hinted at imposing restrictions on the border. If immigration policies are tightened, people from many countries, including Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan, could face problems. During the campaign, Trump said that he would use the military to catch immigrants who do not have legal documents. If this happens, it would be clearly unprecedented.
