The day before the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government (August 4), 7 people were killed in Golapganj of Sylhet by police and BGB firing during the all-out non-cooperation movement of students. 5 died on the day of the incident and two later in the hospital. After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, the interim government came in and reshuffled police officers across the country. The OCs of those police stations were transferred after August 5, especially in those police stations where the police were more aggressive towards the agitators. In continuation of this, OC Machudul Amin, who was in charge of Sylhet’s Golapganj Model Police Station during the agitation, has been transferred. He was replaced by Inspector of Police Mir Muhammad Abdun Nasser. He took charge of the police station on August 15. Sylhet district police media officer ASP Samrat Talukder confirmed the matter.

Golapganj upazila was the most turbulent after Sylhet city during the student movement. On the day of the all-out non-cooperation movement of the students (August 4), various places in the upazila, including Dhaka South, became heated from the morning. That morning, a crowd of students gathered in front of Dhaka South Degree College in Golapganj and started protesting. The police want to remove them. BGB was also present there. At one point, violent clashes between the students and the BGB started. Local residents also got involved in the clash by announcing on the microphones of different mosques. The students-mob and locals pelted bricks and stones at the police-BG and the police-BGB started hurling bullets, tear-cells and sound grenades during the nearly two-hour-long clash. At one point the police and BGB were forced to retreat. Once the conflict spread from Dhaka south to Golapganj town. One person died after being shot in Dhaka South. Later, police and BGB started firing at the protesting students in front of the upazila health complex in Dharabahar of the municipal area around 2 o’clock. Two people were shot dead there. Besides, hundreds of students were shot dead during the clashes in the capital. 5 people died on the spot and in the hospital from morning to night that day. Meanwhile, after the fall of Hasina on August 5, the whole country including Sylhet became unstable. Miscreants attacked all police stations in Sylhet. In fear, the police left the police station and went to a safe place. After nearly 10 days of deadlock, police activities have returned to normal in police stations for 2-3 days. Due to this impasse, the families of the victims could not file a case at the Golapganj police station. However, the new OC of the police station, Mir Muhammad Abdun Nasser, told the media that a case may be filed on behalf of some families on Sunday (August 18).

He said – I joined this police station on August 15. Talked to the families of the victims. They are scheduled to file a case today (Sunday).’
