In a political party dispute in Hemu Bhatpara village of Fatepur Union No. 5 in Jaintapur Upazila, Sylhet, separate attacks, vandalism and arson have occurred at the house and shopping mall of a former student leader, Rezwan Ahmed.

The two separate incidents occurred at the house and shopping mall of Rezwan Ahmed, son of Abdul Majid, in Hemu Bhatpara village of Jaintapur Upazila. Last Friday (August 2) at around 3 pm at his house and on Monday (August 5) at around 12 noon at the shopping mall in Zindabazar.

It is learned that on Friday, August 2, miscreants attacked the former Chhatra League leader Rezwan’s house in Hemu Bhatpara area in the first phase. During this time, they vandalized houses and looted gold and jewelry from the houses and stole nearly lakhs of taka from the houses. They did not stop there either. Later, on Monday (August 5), a group of miscreants looted and set fire to the Haripur Departmental Shopping Mall in the same manner. At that time, the attackers stole goods worth about three million taka and two lakh taka in cash from the shopping mall. At one stage, the entire shopping mall was set on fire while fleeing.

Upon receiving the news of the incident, the entire shopping mall was reduced to ashes before a fire service team reached the spot. Currently, Rezwan’s family is suffering from extreme insecurity. In addition, Rezwan and his family are afraid of approaching the law due to the conflict between the opposition parties in the government.

Locals said that Rezwan was associated with the Chhatra League Sangatan of the former ruling party Awami League. A group of opposition political parties committed this incident to settle scores, focusing on the student-people movement. However, Rezwan’s family claims that a group of 20/25 BNP-Jamaat members carried out this violence after failing to find Rezwan at home and in the shopping mall.

When contacted on the official mobile phone of the officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Model Police Station to inquire about this matter, no statement was received as the phone was not received.
