The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) has highlighted such information in a human rights monitoring report on the killings and human rights violations committed in the 2024 mass uprising.
HRSS research officer Saiful Islam presented this report in a press conference at the National Press Club on Tuesday morning. The report was prepared by analyzing the data sent by 12 national dailies, HRSS’ data research unit and volunteers from across the country.
61 people died in Rajshahi division, 39 in Mymensingh division, 25 in Rangpur division, 20 in Sylhet division and 13 in Barisal division.
HRSS has been able to analyze the mode of death of 646 of those killed. It showed that 455 people died from gunshots, 79 from burns, 78 from beatings and 10 from sharp weapon injuries and 24 from other causes.
Analyzing the data of 435 dead persons, HRSS said that 375 people died at the hands of law and order forces, 35 people died at the hands of Awami League leaders and activists and 25 people died in public beatings.
The agency also analyzed the age of the victims. Analyzing the age of the 470 people killed, HRSS said, among them 83 (18%) were children (under 18), 240 (51%) were youth and 126 (27%) were middle-aged and 21 (4.5%) were elderly. %).
The occupation of the people killed in the movement was also found in the report. The report analyzed the occupations of 293 people, including 144 students, 57 laborers, 51 law enforcement personnel, 5 journalists and 35 other professions.

According to the report of HRSS, at least 6 thousand 703 people were injured in the agitation and received treatment in 31 hospitals of Dhaka city from last 16 to 22 July. More than a thousand students and common people have lost their arms, legs or eyes. More than six hundred people have lost sight in one or both eyes. At least 270 journalists have been injured, threatened, arrested and assaulted while performing their professional duties in the movement.
After former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country, more than five hundred police stations, outposts and government buildings were attacked, vandalized and set on fire across the country. Apart from this, more than eight hundred houses, vehicles and businesses were attacked, vandalized, arson and looted.
From July 17 to August 4, more than 6 lakh people were charged in at least 950 cases across the country based on the movement. At least 12 thousand people were arrested in these cases. In the capital alone, more than 3,000 people were arrested and more than 450,000 people were charged, almost 90 percent of whom were unidentified.
Every time there has been a change of government in the country, there have been incidents of attacks on the minority communities, and this time was no exception, the HRSS said in the report. In the report, they said, at least 24 people were injured in at least 53 attacks on the minority community after the news of the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government spread. In this, 10 temples, 157 homesteads and 177 shops and businesses were attacked, vandalized and looted. Apart from this, places of worship of the Ahmadiyya community were attacked and vandalized in Taraganj of Panchagarh and Rangpur.

HRSS has also raised several demands to the interim government and concerned authorities. These demands include public notification of the list of those killed, formation of an independent commission of inquiry to investigate all deaths, speedy trial through coordinated action with the United Nations, compensation to the families of all those killed, payment of all medical expenses and rehabilitation of the injured. To do, constitute a commission to oversee all matters.
It has also demanded a fair investigation into all incidents of attacks on minority communities and action against those involved. Along with that, forming an independent investigation commission to try all the missing and extrajudicial killings of the past, identifying all the false cases of the past and withdrawing them etc.
Pointing out that the Awami League government has destroyed all the state institutions, HRSS adviser Noor Khan said that corruption has occurred on a large scale. A huge amount of money has been laundered. An employee of the former prime minister’s own office illegally earned hundreds of crores of rupees, but no action was taken against him. He emphasized on taking immediate treatment of the injured persons. Noor Khan also demanded to give the status of ‘national heroes’ to the deceased.
