Veiled women of Srimangal in Moulvibazar district have formed a human chain, protest march and rally demanding that their identity be verified through fingerprints, not faces.
The hour-long human chain and protest rally was organized by the Veiled Women’s Rights Council in front of the Srimangal Press Club of the district from 11 am on Monday (February 10). Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Chief Election Officer through the District Election Officer.
The veiled women in the human chain said that veiled women are victims of discrimination just because they wear full veils. For the past 16 years, numerous veiled women have been denied citizenship on the pretext of not taking a photo of their faces. They are also being deprived in the field of education. They are being forced to reveal their faces in front of strangers during identity verification. They want an end to these harassments.
As a result, veiled women have been deprived of their basic and civil rights and have fallen into great hardship.
Tara further said that the main goal of the student-public uprising in July-August was to establish a society without discrimination. We want an end to the discrimination that has been faced by women for the last 16 years just because of wearing a full veil. NIDs should be issued immediately to veiled women, while keeping their religious rights and privacy intact. In addition, arrangements should be made in the education sector to verify their identity while keeping their religious rights and privacy intact.
The veiled women say that people’s facial expressions change. People’s facial expressions change with time and circumstances. This proves that facial expressions are not a reliable means of verifying identity. However, veiled women are being deprived of citizenship on the pretext of that facial expression, and they are also being made to be naked in the education sector. In addition, identification based on images and faces is a corruption-friendly method, while identification using fingerprints is an anti-corruption method. For example, earlier, identity verification was done in banks based on images and faces, but then fraud such as borrowing money under multiple identities of one person by changing their face occurred.
