Heavy rains and landslides in Sylhet are worsening the flood situation. More than 1 million people have been trapped in water. However, Sylhet District Commissioner Sheikh Russell Hasan told reporters that 1,323 villages in the district were flooded from Tuesday to Wednesday afternoon. Among them, six lakh 75 thousand 937 people were affected by flood. So far 547 shelters have been kept open. In addition to about 18 thousand people in these shelters, several thousand people have taken shelter in 80 centers of the metropolis. At this time, he said, the work of delivering relief to the water-bound people is continuing. Those who are out of touch have called emergency numbers 333 and 999 for relief assistance. Under the initiative of upazila administration, food, water purification tablets, medicines, baby food and cow food are being sent to Kalervitti under the national service number. He said that most of the relief materials are being delivered by boat.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that many areas of Sylhet city, including the lower areas around the Surma river, are still under water. Besides, the condition of Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Companyganj, Kanaighat, Jokiganj areas is embarrassing. The communication system with many upazilas is broken.

On the other hand, the army has been deployed to protect the flood-damaged electricity substation in Sylhet. Yesterday (June 18, 2024) at the request of Sylhet City Corporation under the guidance of Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, SBP (Bar), OSP, NDU, PSC, Ph.D. under In Aid to the Civil Power, the army to protect the flood-damaged Dakshin Surma Baraikandi power substation in Sylhet. is deployed. Electricity is supplied from this power substation to Sylhet Railway Station, Sylhet city’s neighboring areas including Barikandi, Kamalbazar, Masukganj, Bisik, Lalabazar, Shibbari and Kadamtali central bus terminal. Army personnel are working to ensure uninterrupted power supply in these areas.

It should be noted that the Bangladesh Army has been providing assistance to the civil administration under the In Aid to the Civil Power to deal with any disaster.

In Sylhet late last month there was an early flood situation. Then the water goes down. This month, Sylhet was again affected by floods. Especially on the day of Eid (Monday) 7 upazilas of Sylhet including most of the city were flooded by heavy rains and landslides.
