Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Saudi Ambassador to Dhaka Isa Yusuf Isa Al Duhailan paid a courtesy call on Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday. In the meeting, the Chief Adviser referred to Saudi Arabia as a ‘very important friend of Bangladesh’. He recalled his visit to Saudi Arabia at the World Football Summit last year where he addressed the Saudi women’s football team and discussed the extraordinary power of sport to change the world.
The ambassador said that currently there are about 3.2 million Bangladeshis working in Saudi Arabia who are making important contributions to their country. He said that Bangladeshi workers expatriate in Saudi Arabia send about 5 billion dollars in remittances annually through legal channels and another 5 billion dollars through informal channels.
The ambassador said that if it is possible to send money from informal channels to legitimate channels, it can play a significant role in the economic growth of Bangladesh. He praised expatriate Bangladeshis and said, ‘They are hardworking and very religious.’
He raised the issue of renewing the passports of 69,000 unregistered Bangladeshis living in Saudi Arabia since 1970.
The ambassador called for increasing economic relations between the two countries and said that Saudi businessmen are interested in investing more in logistics, service sector and renewable energy sector in Bangladesh through RSGT International and Akwa Power.
He also mentioned that the Makkah Road Initiative has been launched to ease the immigration process to facilitate the performance of Hajj and Umrah.
The Ambassador informed the Chief Adviser that last year around 5 lakh Bangladeshis performed Umrah.
Dr. praised the Saudi leadership for strengthening bilateral relations. Yunus called for the continuation of ongoing cooperation with Saudi Arabia.
