Two Awami League leaders’ houses were attacked and vandalized in Sylhet. One of them is a former mayor and the other is a former MP.
The incident took place on Wednesday (March 2) evening.
Earlier in the morning, the banned Chhatra League took out a sudden procession in the city. It is believed that the attack may have been a result of this.
The two separate attacks took place in the Pathantula and Housing Estate areas of Sylhet city.
Of the two houses that were attacked, one belongs to former City Corporation Mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury and the other to Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, the central organizing secretary of the Awami League and former MP for Moulvibazar-2 (Kulaura) constituency.
Locals said that several people entered the house of Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel in the city’s Housing Estate area after evening. At that time, they vandalized the house’s CCTV camera and laptop.
Meanwhile, an attack was also carried out on the house of Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury in the city’s Pathantula area around 7:30 pm. Similarly, the attackers vandalized the house’s furniture. However, no one was injured in the two separate attacks.
Airport Police Station OC Syed Anisur Rahman said that the angry student crowd attacked and vandalized the house of Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel. After receiving the information, the police visited the scene.
Jalalabad Police Station OC Harunur Rashid said that after receiving the information about the attack, the police went to the scene. I heard that the angry student crowd carried out the attack.
Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said that in this situation, the banned people are the target of sudden provocation. However, BNP does not support taking law and order into their own hands. He urged the law and order forces to take a tougher and stronger stance.
