50 luxury cars brought in duty free facility are stuck at Chittagong port. The cars were brought by the MPs of the recently defunct Sheikh Hasina government. But as the parliament dissolved before the cars reached the port, they can no longer be cleared at the duty-free facility. At least 6 crore rupees have to be paid for each car. Where each of these luxury cars has been imported under one crore rupees.
Secretary of Chittagong Port Authority Omar Farooq said that several luxury cars brought to the duty-free facility by MPs of the outgoing government are stuck at the port. Now that they are not members of Parliament, they no longer get that benefit. So, to release the cars, you have to pay the duty as usual.
It is known that former Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku imported the cars in duty-free facilities, former Minister Dr. Abdur Razzak and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Former Minister of State for Information Mohammad Ali Arafat, Former Member of Parliament Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, Actor Ferdous Ahmed, Former Member of Parliament of Netrokona Sazzadul Hasan, Former Member of Parliament of Brahmanbaria SAK Ekramuzzaman, Faizur Rahman, Chayan Islam of Sirajganj, Jannat Ara. Henry, Abul Kalam of Natore, Siddiqur Rahman Patwari, Mojibur Rahman Manju of Bogra, Rezaul Karim Tansen, Anupam Shahjahan Joy of Tangail, Barrister Syed Syedul Haque Sumon of Habiganj, Ranjit Sarkar of Sunamganj, Dr. Sadiq, Abul Kalam Azad of Gaibandha, Barrister Shahjahan Omar, Nawab Ali Joardar of Jessore, Nasser Shahriar Zahidi of Jhenaidah, Masud Uddin Chowdhury of Laxmipur and Muhammad Zakaria of Dinajpur.
Among them, a few days before the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, former member of parliament Shakib Al Hasan, actor Ferdous Ahmed and some others have redeemed their cars.
It is known that most of the cars brought to the duty free facility have been imported from Japan and Singapore. Among them, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Jeep, Toyota LC station wagon model cars have engine capacity of 4 thousand cc.
Officials of Chittagong Customs House told the media that they will no longer get the benefit of duty-free vehicle exemption as there are no members of Parliament. To get these car discounts, you have to pay the prescribed duty.
4 thousand cc each will be taxed at the rate of 826 percent. Commissioner of Chittagong Customs House Mohammad Faizur Rahman said, according to the law, MPs can bring cars to the duty-free facility. However, after August 6, no vehicle is supposed to have that duty-free facility. Because of this, we have stopped some cars coming in that system.
