Dhaka University administration strongly condemns ugly and obscene remarks of Barguna district Jamaat-e-Islami leader regarding Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) and female students of the university. In this regard, students have taken out a protest march at Dhaka University to protest the remarks. They held this program at the foot of Raju statue this Sunday evening.
DUCSU Research and Publication Secretary Sanjida Ahmed Tanni, DUCSU member Hema Chakma, Poet Sufia Kamal Hall Sangsad’s Joint General Secretary Shimu Akhter, Jagannath Hall Sangsad’s VP Pallab Chandra Barman, student representatives of various halls and general students were present at the rally.
During the protest, they raised slogans like ‘Black hands of the rajakar, break them and crush them’, ‘Shamim’s two cheeks, beat his shoes to the beat’ and ‘This country is the land of women, it will not be the land of the rajakar’.
On Sunday, at an election rally in the Patharghata area of Barguna-2 constituency, Barguna district Jamaat-e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General and MP candidate Shamim Ahsan once called DUCSU a ‘drug den’ and a ‘brothel’ and claimed that the Islami Chhatra Shibir had changed that environment. The students alleged that his statement was extremely insulting to Dhaka University and especially female students.
At the rally, the students said that the Jamaat leader’s statement not only insulted DUCSU or Dhaka University, but also denied the dignity and struggle of the country’s women’s society.
They said that Dhaka University was the birthplace of the language movement and the liberation war; by calling that university a ‘brothel’, the sacrifices and contributions of women have been insulted. Women from remote areas of the country come to Dhaka University for higher education with great difficulty, using such language about them is tantamount to insulting the entire Bangladesh.
They also expressed anger over the silence of the current VP and GS of DUCSU at the rally and said that DUCSU leadership is repeatedly playing a silent role on the issue of the interests and dignity of ordinary students. They strongly criticized the lack of any official protest or statement from DUCSU despite this comment by the Jamaat leader.
During the protest, the students gave Shamim Ahsan an ultimatum to publicly apologize within the next 24 hours. At the same time, they demanded that the Election Commission cancel his nomination.
In this regard, a notice signed by the acting director of the university’s public relations department, Rafiqul Islam, said that the attention of the Dhaka University authorities has been drawn to a statement made by Md. Shamim Ahsan, Assistant Secretary General of Barguna District Jamaat-e-Islami, regarding DUCSU Bhaban. The university authorities strongly condemn and protest against this obscene, ugly, indecent and vulgar statement.
It is said that his statement has severely damaged the image, reputation, tradition and honor of Dhaka University. The university authorities call for his immediate withdrawal of this statement. The university administration requests everyone to refrain from making such vulgar statements.
