Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar has called for keeping the dignity of the degree earned bright and intact through one’s behavior, professionalism and character traits. She said that higher education is not just about earning a certificate, but rather a preparation for fulfilling responsibilities towards society and country.
She made these remarks as the president’s representative at the third convocation ceremony of Asha University Bangladesh at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in the capital on Saturday (January 24) morning.
Farida Akhtar said that waste emitted from various industries including Narayanganj is flowing into the Meghna through Shitalaksha. This is seriously threatening the existence of various aquatic animals including Hilsa. Research has found the presence of harmful elements such as microplastics, lead and cadmium in the body of Hilsa fish, which is a matter of deep concern. She said that making the river pollution-free is an important national responsibility. This is not the sole responsibility of the government. This problem cannot be solved without the active participation and awareness of the people.
The Fisheries Advisor also said that the responsibility of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is not limited to cows, goats or poultry. The protection of all animals including dogs and cats is also part of the responsibility of this ministry. If dogs are not properly vaccinated, the risk of various diseases including rabies increases. Recently, the Ministry provided vaccinations and treatment at an event on pets organized at Dhaka University. Through this, the importance of taking care of animals was highlighted.
Urging students to be health conscious, the Advisor said that smoking and using tobacco products cause serious damage to the body. Many young people think that these habits will make them modern or fashionable. In reality, these are the causes of various complex diseases including heart disease and cancer. He also mentioned that the recently enacted law on smoking and tobacco control is mandatory for everyone.
Highlighting the importance of the country’s resources and natural resources, Farida Akhtar said that Bangladesh is not a poor country. Human skills, natural resources, clean water, seeds and genetic resources are the great strength of the country. In the future, world conflicts may be centered on water, seeds or natural resources. Therefore, the responsibility of the young generation in protecting the country and protecting its natural resources is important.
The Fisheries Advisor said that the youth should be active against corruption, environmental pollution and unhealthy habits. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the country healthy, safe and prosperous for the next generation.
At the convocation ceremony, SM Rezaul Karim, Vice Chancellor of Asha University Bangladesh, delivered the welcome speech. Mohammad Abdul Momen, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, spoke as the convocation speaker. Mohammad Faruk, representative of the Board of Trustees, and Mohammad Anwar Hossain, member of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission, also spoke.
