Police have detained three individuals in connection with an incident where a teenage girl was paraded on the street with a chain tied around her waist after being accused of attempting to steal money from a shop’s cash box in the Upashahar area of ​​Sylhet city. They were detained during a raid on Tuesday night following a massive public outcry sparked by a video of the incident circulating on social media. Subsequently, on Wednesday (September 9), a case was filed against them, and they were sent to jail by the court.

The detainees are Md. Zakir Hossain (43) and Md. Mozakkir Hossain (40)—sons of the late Jalal Uddin of House No. 51, Road No. 44, Block C, Shahjalal Upashahar—and Md. Burhan Uddin (45), son of Md. Mojibur Rahman of House No. 54 in the same area.

Ferdous Ahmad, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahparan (Rah.) Police Station, stated that the three individuals were identified after reviewing video footage of the incident. They were subsequently detained following a raid.

Md. Monjurul Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, stated that a case was filed against the three individuals regarding the incident. Upon being produced before the court, the court ordered them to be sent to jail.

It is reported that a 16-year-old girl was detained by some locals in the Upashahar area—under the jurisdiction of Shahparan (Rah.) Police Station—on allegations of attempting to steal money from a shop’s cash box. She was subsequently paraded on the street with a chain tied around her waist. At one point, she was handed over to the police. The incident became a major topic of discussion after the video circulated on social media, drawing negative reactions from concerned citizens. Upon taking cognizance of the matter, the police conducted a raid that same night and detained the three individuals.

SMP Media Officer Md. Monjurul Alam said, “A case has been filed against the detained individuals under the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act. Following the case, they were sent to jail via the court.”
