Three children have died by drowning in ponds—unnoticed by their relatives—in Kaliganj, Satkhira, and Lama, Bandarban. The accidents occurred on Friday afternoon.
The incident in Kaliganj took place in the Sonatala area of Dakshin Sripur Union. The deceased children are Abdullah (8), son of Ajgar Ali from that village, and Iqbal Hossain (7), son of Aminur Biswas from Baliadanga village.
According to neighbor Ishrat Ali, Iqbal Hossain had come to visit his maternal grandfather’s house in Sonatala village with his relatives. On Friday, during the Jumu’ah (Friday) prayers, family members went to the mosque. Meanwhile, Iqbal and Abdullah went near a pond belonging to Abu Bakkar Sheikh, located next to the house. At one point, both of them fell into the pond and drowned.
Nahar Begum, wife of local resident Akbar Gazi, spotted the children floating and alerted their relatives. Subsequently, the bodies of the two children were recovered.
Sushanta Kumar Ghosh, Inspector (Investigation) of Kaliganj Police Station, stated that the police visited the scene after receiving the news and handed over the bodies to the relatives.
Meanwhile, a 7-year-old child named Nahid died by drowning in a pond in Lama, Bandarban. This accident occurred in the afternoon at Bazar Para in Ward No. 5 of Rupasipara Union.
Nahid was the son of Md. Sumon and Nurubanu, a couple from the area. Both parents were away from home for work. Nahid used to work at a shop in Rupasipara Bazar. According to locals, Nahid entered the pond of the Rupasipara Orphanage unnoticed by anyone around midday on Friday. After he was missing for a long time, locals spotted him floating in the pond during their search. He was taken to the Lama Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
