A young man named Russel Ahmed (23) was killed and at least 20 others were injured in a clash between two groups following a verbal altercation in Silam Union of South Surma Upazila, Sylhet.
The clash took place on Friday after Jumu’ah prayers in front of the Hazrat Shah Tayyab Sailani (RA) Mosque and Eidgah in the Choker Bazar area of Silam. The deceased, Russel, was the son of Shahruk Miah from the local Sheikhpara village.
According to local sources, a long-standing dispute has existed between two factions in Sheikhpara village regarding the management committee of the Shah Tayyab Sailani (RA) Waqf Estate. An argument broke out between the two groups after Friday prayers, subsequently escalating into a clash.
During the hour-long confrontation, members of both groups used sticks and bricks. Russel, who was injured in the clash, died after being taken to the hospital.
Moglabazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosharraf Hossain stated that the clash—which resulted in one death—stemmed from a verbal altercation rather than the Waqf committee issue itself. The body has been kept at the Osmani Hospital morgue for an autopsy. No complaint has been filed by either party so far.
