The police seized a drum truck loaded with illegal Indian sugar worth around 5 lakh rupees. On Thursday (September 12), the truck was seized from in front of a commercial building on Shahchatt Road in Kalighat, Sylhet. The smugglers fled when they sensed the presence of the police.

According to local and police sources, Indian sugar was brought in by smugglers covered with tarpaulin and covered with sand in sacks to hide them. The truck was supposed to unload the sacks of sugar at Kalighat, a wholesaler in Sylhet city. But a patrolling team of Sylhet Metropolitan Police managed to impound the sugar laden truck based on a tip-off.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Media Officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohammad Saiful Islam has confirmed the truth of this matter. He said that the smugglers placed sugar sacks inside a drum truck and covered it with sand. Then cover the truck with tarp. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided and seized 85 sacks of Indian sugar from the truck. The market value of the seized sugar is around Tk 5 lakh. At that time he said that 3-4 smugglers fled after realizing the presence of the police. Attempts are being made to arrest them.
