The police have seized illegal Indian cloth worth around two crore rupees from a stone-laden truck on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway. Meanwhile, two more smugglers were caught red-handed. Police said that another smuggler escaped.
This huge amount of cloth was seized when the Shahparan (R.) outpost police intercepted and searched the truck loaded with stones in front of Bateshwar Jalalabad Cantonment Board School on Monday morning on a tip-off. The truck driver and an accomplice were arrested.
The arrested are Shakil (32) of Mohannid Budhpara village of Motihar police station of Rajshahi district and Maruf (24) of Ganir Dalan village of the same upazila. The other absconding person is Taher (25), son of Rafiq Ahmed of village Hemu Haudpara of Jaintapur Police Station No. 5-Fatehpur Union of Sylhet District.
During the arrest, 3 thousand 962 pieces of Indian sarees and 202 pieces of lehengas kept in 61 sacks were seized from the truck. The market value of which will be around 1 crore 82 lakh 72 thousand, police said.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Media Officer Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed the truth of this operation.
