A learned court sentenced three people to life imprisonment and one to three years in the TomTom robbery case by killing the driver in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganjar. Besides, each has been fined 50,000 taka, in default of payment he has been sentenced to imprisonment for another six months.
Habiganj Additional District and Sessions Judge (Second) Court Judge Md. Yashir Arafat announced the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The convicts are- Muslim Mia (24) of Bejura village of Madhavpur upazila, Angraj Mia alias Sohel (39) of Jatukarna para of Baniachang and Ruban Mia (35) of Kharki village of Madhavpur upazila. Besides, Rubel Miya (37) of Jatukarna neighborhood has been sentenced to three years imprisonment on the charge of theft. During the announcement of the verdict, the three accused who were sentenced to life imprisonment were brought to the court from the prison. Rubel Mia is absconding.
Peshkar Tapan Singh said that on July 17, 2019, the charred body of Tomtom driver Alamgir Miar (26) was recovered from Satchhari National Park of Chunarughat Upazila. In this regard, SI Habibur Rahman of Chunarughat police station filed a case against unknown persons. After the police recovered the TomTom from Rubel Mia, the mystery of the murder was revealed.
Later, when the three accused were arrested and produced in the court, they gave a statement under section 164 and confessed to robbing Alamgir Mia after killing him.
The case was first reported by the then SI of Chunarughat police station. Shalai Miah and SI Al Amin investigated. Later, SI Abdul Motaleb completed the investigation and submitted a report to the court on February 18, 2021.
When the accused applied for bail in the high court, the court rejected the bail and ordered to complete the trial within 6 months. The judgment was given on Monday after taking the testimony of 24 people in the case.
Lawyer Habibur Rahman Khan said that the state party is satisfied with this verdict. Meanwhile, 3 accused have been sent to jail on warrant. An arrest warrant was issued against another person. The plaintiff in the case is SI Habibur Rahman of Chunarughat police station.
