Army vehicles were vandalized and set on fire in Gopalganj. 15 people including army personnel, journalists and locals were injured in this incident. Two of them have been shot.
On Saturday (August 10) afternoon, Awami League activists gathered at Gopinathpur bus stand of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila and blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway in favor of Sheikh Hasina. When the army members asked to lift the blockade of the road, the leaders and activists of the party carried out the attack.
Lieutenant Colonel Maksudur Rahman of Gopalganj camp said that the protestors started throwing bricks and mortars as the army members said to withdraw from the road. At one stage, army personnel resorted to lathicharge and firing blanks to disperse the crowd. At one stage they vandalized the army vehicle and set it on fire.
He said, ‘3 to 4 thousand people gathered in Gopinathpur area of Sadar Upazila and blocked the road. When they were asked to move off the road, they started pelting bricks and mortars and at one stage vandalized an army vehicle and set fire to the vehicle. 4 army personnel were injured in this.
