After Sheikh Hasina left the country after resigning in the face of the students’ movement, the people of Sylhet celebrated victory like the rest of the country. When the devastated city is defenseless and insecure, he enters the field to establish peace.
Sylhet BNP leaders continued their efforts from Monday (August 5) night to Wednesday (August 10). Have a busy time.
After the resignation and escape of Sheikh Hasina, looting started in different parts of the city from Monday (August 5) afternoon. In Nayasad, the fashion house ‘Maha’ was robbed the most. The miscreants looted clothes and fashion items worth crores of rupees. Shops in different places of the city were looted. The attack was carried out in the city hall. Authorities say the attack has caused at least 12 million rupees worth of damage to the city building. Police Superintendent’s Office, Kotwali Police Station, Dakshin Surma Police Station, Bandarbazar Police Station, Sobhanighat Police Station and Lamabazar Police Station were vandalized and torched. The Deputy Commissioner’s office was also not spared from the attack. Attacks, vandalism and arson took place in the homes of more than half a hundred leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliates.
In this situation, the police stations became empty due to panic. Law and order and traffic system collapsed. After the violence, field level employees of Sylhet City Corporation are not attending work due to fear. As a result, service activities are disrupted. In this situation, BNP leaders entered the field to establish peace and order in the city.
On Monday night, BNP Chairperson’s advisor and Sylhet City Corporation’s former mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, advisor Dr. Leaders including Enamul Haque Chowdhury, former president of district BNP Abul Kaher Chowdhury Shamim and convener of district volunteer party Abdul Ahad Khan Jamal called the people to come forward to protect law and order.
They also called upon the party leaders and workers to come to the field along with the people to prevent looters. Since then, the leaders and activists of BNP and other organizations took the initiative to keep vigil at various places in the city. They are especially vigilant so that no one can attack the houses and religious institutions of the minority community.
Last Tuesday, district and metropolitan BNP held a press conference and claimed that the looting and vandalism in the city has nothing to do with the BNP or the party’s affiliates. The BNP leaders claimed that the opportunists mixed up with the Matwara student crowd in Vijayollas and caused these untoward incidents.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders worked throughout the day to restore peace and order in Sylhet. He visited various police establishments and assured them of cooperation in discharging their duties. In the afternoon, Ariful Haque Chowdhury visited various areas of the city including Bandar Bazar. At this time, he also observed the waste management work of CCIC and urged all the employees of Nagarbhaban to participate in the work and ensure citizen service. He also assured all kinds of cooperation for their security.
Meanwhile, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, another advisor of BNP Chairperson, met with the businessmen at Ambarkhana in the city on Wednesday and gave them courage. He expressed the promise that the BNP leaders and activists will stand by to ensure the safety of the businessmen.
