Syed Syed Uddin Degree College in Madhabpur upazila has changed its name from Maulana Asad Ali to its former name. After getting its name back after a long seven years, there is joy and enthusiasm among the upazila residents, students, teachers and guardians.
On Tuesday (December 17), the National University authorities issued a circular confirming this information. The then MP and State Minister for Aviation, Advocate Mahbub Ali, used his influence to change the name of Madhabpur Syed Syed Uddin Degree College to his father Maulana Asad Ali Degree College. Although there was pent-up anger among the upazila residents, Syed Syed Uddin’s family did not protest. On August 5, when the country’s context changed, the aggrieved students – the public – sent complaints to the concerned department demanding that the name Maulana Asad Ali be changed to Syed Syed Uddin Degree College.
Meanwhile, the college teachers said that a college was established in the name of Syed Syed Uddin, a political figure of the anti-British movement and a member of the Provincial Council, in the northern part of the Madhabpur upazila, in order to expand education in rural areas at the higher secondary and degree levels. At the beginning of its establishment, the college had no infrastructure. Various financial difficulties arose, including the salaries of the teachers. Later, Syed Syed Uddin’s sons and grandsons, through the “Sayham Shilpa Group family”, bore the costs of the college’s infrastructure, including the academic building, boundary wall, teachers’ salaries and all other expenses. After the college was nationalized, Honors-Masters degrees were introduced.
In 2017, the name of Syed Saeed Uddin was suddenly deleted and the name was written as Maulana Asad Ali Degree College. At that time, the college was renamed after the father of the State Minister for Aviation, Advocate, by abusing political power and influence. The name of Syed Saeed Uddin, a universally accepted educationist, was deleted, and people in every union and municipality of Madhabpur Upazila protested.
Mozammel Haque, a third-year student of the college, said that thousands of students have been in trouble with their certificates due to the sudden change in the name of Syed Saeed Uddin College. Currently, the students are happy that the name of Syed Saeed Uddin College has been changed to its previous name.
College professor Mizanur Rahman told this correspondent that truth has triumphed in the month of great victory. The National University authorities have now retained the name of the college with its previous name. Everyone is happy about this.
National University College Inspector Abdul Hai Sikder Sarkar said that a circular has been issued in the syndicate meeting to remove the name Maulana Asad Ali College and retain the previous name Syed Syed Uddin Degree College.
