A group of Dhaka University (DU) students have called on the chief advisor to ‘organize dialogue’ between the two factions of Tablighi Jamaat.

They made this call at a press conference on the DU campus on Wednesday (December 25).

The students claimed to be ordinary students and said they have no political affiliation.

They said they have organized this press conference to put forward some proposals to resolve the dispute within the Tablighi Jamaat.

At the press conference, a DU law student named Shishir Ahmed Tanim said, ‘The allegations in the statement are about Sa’d (Maulana Mohammad Sa’d Kandalvi) Sahib and whether Sa’d Sahib is the Ameer or not. For this, the elders of both sides should come to dialogue.’

Shishir Ahmed Tanim said, “If the two sides’ religious leaders, those we respect, come together, then we can come to a solution through dialogue with the mediation of the two religious leaders, with them as judges.”

At that time, Abdullah Al Mahmud, a student of the Physics Department of Dhaka University, claimed that the followers of Maulana Sa’d are facing extreme discrimination due to the division of the Tabligh Jamaat.

Eleven demands were raised in this press conference. Among them are an effective solution to the dispute between Sa’d and Zubayr supporters, ensuring religious freedom for followers of all sides, stopping extremism-violence-mob justice nationwide, and taking urgent steps to protect the lives and property of worshippers including journalists.

It is worth noting that there has been a conflict in the country for the past few years between the two factions of the Tabligh Jamaat, the ‘Zubayr’ and the ‘Sa’d supporters.’ This has led to several clashes in the past.

On December 17, at least four people were killed in a clash between two sides over control of the Bishwa Ijtema Maidan on the banks of Turag in Tongi. About fifty followers of both sides were injured in the incident.

On Tuesday, followers of Maulana Zubair Ahmed held a press conference at the Kakrail Mosque premises and demanded a ban on followers of Maulana Mohammad Saad Kandalvi. Source: BBC Bangla
