Villagers beat him up, broke his hands and legs and gouged out both eyes on suspicion of theft

In Charfason, Bhola, locals gouged out both eyes of a man named Shahjahan Mintiz (40) on suspicion of theft. The incident took place in Char Arkalmi village of Nazrul Nagar union of Dakshin Aicha police station on Sunday morning. Later, the village police rescued him and took him to Charfason Hospital.

The injured Mintiz is the son of ‘Chidu Chora’ of ward number 4 of that union. Chidu died in prison a few years ago.

The villagers claim that Mintiz is the leader of the thief gang. However, his wife Fatema Begum said that he was picked up suspiciously, beaten up, broke his hands and legs and had his two eyes gouged out. She alleged that Md. Shakib, son of Maulana Lokman Hossain, principal of the middle Char Fazil Madrasa, and his gang were involved in the act.

Locals said that Mintiz’s family has been involved in theft and robbery for a long time. His father Chidu was a professional thief. Mintiz is involved in crimes like theft, robbery and robbery in the southern part of Bhola. Recently, several houses in different unions of the upazila were robbed.

On Sunday morning, locals saw Mintiz at his house in Char Arkalmi village, chased him and arrested him from Jahangir Farazi’s house. Later, he was taken to the pond of Barek Farazi’s house in the village, beaten, his hands and legs were broken and both eyes were gouged out. On receiving the information, village policeman Sorhab Hossain, with the help of some people, rescued him and sent him to Char Fashion Hospital.

Mintiz’s wife Fatema Begum said that people led by Shakib, son of madrasa principal Maulana Lokman Hossain, chased and arrested Mintiz from Jahangir Farazi’s house. Later, they took him to the pond of Barek Farazi’s house, beat him, broke his hands and legs, and gouged out his eyes with a knife. He said that although he was present at the time of the incident, he could not identify himself out of fear.

Denying the allegations, Md. Shakib said, “Mintiz is a professional thief and the leader of a gang of thieves. I heard that the locals chased him and caught him, gang-raped him and gouged out his eyes.”

Deputy Assistant Medical Officer of the Emergency Department at Char Fashion Hospital Riaz Uddin said, “The hands and legs of the person named Mintiz were broken and his eyes were gouged out. He has been sent to Dhaka for better treatment.”

OC of Dakshin Aicha Police Station Ershadul Haque Bhuiyan said, “After receiving information, he was rescued and sent to the hospital. Legal action will be taken later.”
