Due to the financial crisis, the workers in the tea gardens of Sylhet had been living a miserable life without receiving salaries and rations for several months. Sylhet Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad has stood by them in this critical situation.
Cash and rice were distributed among 1,400 workers of 4 tea gardens in Sadar Upazila on Friday (March 28) afternoon.
It is learned that the workers of Burjan, Kalagul, Cheragang and Factory tea gardens in Sadar Upazila had been living an inhumane life without receiving salaries and rations for 15 to 17 weeks. When the matter came to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner, he immediately took up the distribution of 7 lakh taka in cash and 14 metric tons of rice among the tea workers.
On Friday afternoon, Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Ms. Khoshnur Rubaiyat, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Mahbubul Islam, Metropolitan AC Land Md. Alim Ullah Khan, Senior Assistant Commissioner of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Marina Debnath, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Shirshendu Purkayastha, Chairman of Khadimnagar Union Dilwar Hossain and others handed over the aid to the workers.
The tea workers, who were excited to receive the relief aid, expressed their gratitude to the district administration and said, “Our DC sir has given rice and teka. We are all very happy in the garden.”
UNO Ms. Khoshnur Rubaiyat said that this aid has been given to each worker in the form of 500 taka and 10 kg of rice.
