A man named Abdul Qayyum (50) was stabbed to death over a disagreement over holding Eid congregation at the Eidgah in Sadarghat village of Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district. Tension is prevailing in the area over the incident.

The incident took place in front of the Paschim Para Jame Mosque in Sadarghat village of Debpara union of Nabiganj upazila at around 9:30 pm on Friday (March 28).

The deceased Abdul Qayyum is the son of the deceased Abdul Majid of Sadarghat Dakshinpara village of Debpara union of Nabiganj upazila.

According to police and local sources, most of the people of Dakshinpara and Paschim Para of Sadarghat village of Nabiganj upazila perform Eid congregation at Syed Ali Eidgah located in Sadarghat Dakshinpara area every year. Recently, due to complications over the waqf papers of the Syed Ali Eidgah site, there was a disagreement among the people of Paschimpara regarding holding Eid congregation at the Eidgah.

After Tarawih prayers on Friday night, people from Dakshinpara and Paschimpara of Sadarghat village gathered at the Paschimpara Jame Mosque in Sadarghat village to discuss the issue of holding Eid congregation at the Eidgah. At that time, after discussing the issue of Eid congregation at the Eidgah, when they were coming out of the mosque, Mujahid Mia, son of Kazi Sundar Ali of that village, stabbed Abdul Qayyum, son of the deceased Abdul Majid of Sadarghat Dakshinpara village, in front of the mosque. Abdul Qayyum was seriously injured in the stabbing. Abdul Qayyum was rescued and taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Meanwhile, when the news of his death spread in the area, tension arose among the locals. Upon receiving the information, Nabiganj Police Station OC Kamal Hossain led the Nabiganj Police Station and the police of Goplar Bazar Investigation Center went to the spot.

Debpara Union Parishad Chairman Shah Riaz Nadir Sumon said that a person named Abdul Qayyum died in a stabbing attack over Eid congregation. Abdul Qayyum was a worshipper and official in the area.

In this regard, Nabiganj Police Station OC Kamal Hossain said, “Initially, we have learned that a person died in a stabbing attack over a discussion over Eid congregation in Sadarghat village. We are at the spot, we will be able to provide details later.”
