BNP held a solidarity meeting on the occasion of International Day of Missing Persons. The party leaders as well as family members of the missing person participated in it. Relatives told about the hardships. Many broke down in tears. Tears in the eyes of the leaders and activists present.
Such a picture was seen at the BNP’s solidarity meeting at Nayapaltan in the capital on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reminisced about the missing people in a tearful voice.
He demanded the interim government to take initiative to investigate the disappearances of the last 15 years in Bangladesh under the UN. At the same time, he urged the state to take responsibility for the family of the missing person.
Mirza Fakhrul said, I have been in politics for a long time. I knew about being arrested, I knew about killing, but I didn’t know about disappearing. After Awami League came to power, the law and order forces have committed terrible crimes against humanity.
He said, this is the first time a team from the United Nations has come to take action against the atrocities of dictatorship in Bangladesh. This is the Primary Team Facts and Funding Team. But in their terms of reference, they will investigate the murders that have taken place in the last two months. I would like to call on the government to talk to the UN Human Rights Commission. Arrange an investigation into every crime against humanity, murder, disappearance for the last 15 years till date. If you (the interim government) say it, the United Nations must do it.
Fakhrul said, we want to say this (investigation under the United Nations) very strongly. From 2009 to today, every one of the torture-oppression-murders, disappearances, should be investigated by this UN committee and the government should take measures.
Referring to the government’s formation of an inquiry commission to search for missing persons, BNP Secretary General said that the interim government has formed a commission. It is a good initiative. But at the same time I would like to urge the government, you arrange to give allowance to the family of every missing person. Because we know, there are many families here, who are running their families with great difficulty, bringing up their children, teaching in schools and colleges. It is the responsibility of the state to stand by these families.
Expressing sympathy with the ‘pain’ of the family members of the missing persons, Mirza Fakhrul said that the family members of the missing persons have been talking about their suffering for a long time. We know more or less those responsible for the disappearances. Those who were in charge, who were in charge of RAB, who were in charge of the special forces of the police, should be found out. They should be punished.
