Sheikh Hasina’s statement a threat to Bangladesh’s democratic transition and security: Foreign Ministry

Diplomatic Correspondent //

The Bangladesh government has expressed surprise and deep anger over the opportunity given to Sheikh Hasina, a fugitive convicted of crimes against humanity, to address a public event in the Indian capital New Delhi. The government says that the statement incited violence with the aim of overthrowing the Bangladesh government and disrupting the upcoming national elections, which is a threat to Bangladesh’s democratic transition and security.

This was stated in a statement by the Foreign Ministry on Sunday. It said that Sheikh Hasina, a fugitive convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity, was given the opportunity to deliver a statement at a public event in New Delhi on January 23. In it, she openly called for the overthrow of the Bangladesh government and clearly incited her party followers and the general public to engage in terrorist activities to disrupt the upcoming national elections. The government and people of Bangladesh have been surprised and shocked by this.

The statement further said that despite repeated requests from the Bangladesh government, India has not yet taken any effective action regarding the obligation to hand over Sheikh Hasina under the bilateral extradition treaty. Instead, she has been given the opportunity to make such provocative statements on Indian soil, which has deeply hurt Bangladesh. This is clearly endangering the democratic transition and peace and prosperity of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh government believes that allowing such an event in the Indian capital and allowing the ‘genocide’ Sheikh Hasina to make public hateful statements there is contrary to the prevailing principles of mutual relations between states, such as respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and good neighborly conduct. It is also mentioned in the statement that this is a clear insult to the government and people of Bangladesh.

The statement warned that this incident could set a dangerous precedent for the future of Bangladesh-India relations. At the same time, it is likely to damage the ability of the future elected government of Bangladesh to build and advance mutually beneficial bilateral relations.

The Foreign Ministry statement said that the brazenly provocative statements of the Awami League leadership have once again shown why the interim government was forced to ban the party’s activities. The party will be held responsible for violence and terrorist activities before and on the day of the elections.

The statement also mentioned that all necessary measures will be taken to prevent any kind of violence and conspiracy centered around the upcoming national elections.
