President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, we have got democracy, protecting democracy is now our biggest task, biggest responsibility. There is this opposition party, there is the government party, I think the main responsibility of the government party and the opposition party will be to sustain the democratic situation. The main responsibility is to make the parliament functional so that the work is done properly and other issues that may be disagreeable can be resolved through dialogue.
He said that the government formed under the leadership of Tariq Rahman is trying to wake up the country from the ruins very quickly. After much sacrifice and bloodshed, we were able to remove a fascist and create a democratic environment. So the opportunity to institutionalize democracy has come.
Addressing his wife, the President said, the one sitting here is my wife. He forgot to speak if I don’t thank him I would be wrong if I don’t say it because he has given me courage in my journey, he has raised my children and he is still giving me courage by my side.
The President said these things at the civic reception organized in honor of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir by Sylhet City Corporation.
Earlier, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited Sylhet after assuming office for the first time. The President’s wife Rahat Ara Begum was with him at the time.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir arrived at the Sylhet Osmani International Airport at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning (September 15) on a US Bangla Airlines flight from Dhaka.
On reaching Sylhet he visited the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hazrat Shahparan (RA). This is his first visit to Sylhet after taking office as President.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Expatriate Welfare and Labor and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Jatiya Sangsad Whip Md. welcomed the President at the airport. GK Gouch, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, local parliamentarians, political leaders and senior officers of divisional and district administrations.
Later, the President came to Sylhet Circuit House from the airport. A smart team of Bangladesh Police gave him a guard of honor there.
After a short break at Circuit House, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited the shrine of Sufi saint Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) at Dargagate area of the city at around 12:30 PM. Here he prayed for the progress and prosperity of the country and people.
After visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA), the President directly left for the shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran (RA) in Khadim Nagar, Sylhet. There the President visited the shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran (RA) and offered Zohar prayers.
During this one-day visit to Sylhet, the President attended a civic reception organized by the City Corporation at Sylhet Nagar Bhavan premises at 3:30 pm.
