In Balu Mahal of Jaintapur-Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet, the business of collection of subscriptions is going on. Even though the upazila administration conducted two operations to stop collection of fees, the festival of illegal sand mining is not stopped due to mysterious reasons.
Locals complain that after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, some dishonest influential people are managing the local administration and the business of extortion has been going on. Some dishonest yellow journalists are not excluded from this.
According to related sources, Lengura Balu Mahal of Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet District No. 05.46.9100.008.52.005.21.674 and Sari Nadi (1) Balu Mahal of Jaintapur Upazila 05.46.9100.008.52.048 .Swar No. 20.673 was leased to SL Enterprises for 1431 Bangla Sun. The owner of that institution is Jubo League leader Subhas Das, son of Nalini Kant Das of Gowain village of Gowainghat upazila.
Subhas Das fled after the change of Awami League government in the student-janata popular uprising on August 5. Taking advantage of the tenant’s absconding, a person named Golam Kibria Russell, a member of Gowainghat Upazila Awami League, a resident of Lengura area, with his cousins Rabbani and Habib Gong, along with his cousins Rabbani and Habib Gong, broke the name of BNP in broad daylight and took a small boat from Lengura and Sari River 1 Balumhal 7-8 thousand. And the big boat is getting 14-16 thousand taka daily from more than 300 boats and is becoming the owner of lakhs of taka in a short time. But the administration is playing the role of a silent spectator without taking effective steps to stop extortion.
When asked about the collection of subscriptions, Subhas Das could not be contacted as his phone was switched off. On the other hand, when Golam Kibria tried to contact Russell along with his cell phone, there was no response as his phone was not received.
When Gowainghat Upazila Assistant Commissioner Bhumi was contacted over the phone, he told the reporter that Lengura Balu Mahal has been leased but he does not remember the name of the institution. When asked about extortion, he said that he does not have any such information.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gowainghat contacted over the phone to find out about this, he said, “We have come to know that a gang is extorting money from Lengura Balu Mahal with fake receipts, and the lessee is absconding. The higher officials have been informed about the two issues.” I filed a case of blocking Ballgate and another case of extortion in Goainghat police station.
Gowainghat police station officer-in-charge Shah Haroon Rashid was contacted over the phone and he confirmed the two cases of extortion in Lengura Balu Mahal and said that we are trying to bring the extortionists under the law soon.
Meanwhile, Jaintapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was contacted over the phone and he said, “No one has complained of extortion, and I am not aware of the matter, but if anyone complains, I will take action.” Many people complained to the army camp, I will investigate and see if there is a complaint.
When the officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Police Station was contacted over the phone, he said, “I have no complaint about the Balu Mahal of Sari Nadi 1.” However, if the police are needed from Mr. UNO, then the police will definitely be there.
