OC Moin arrested in connection with murder of journalist Turab in Sylhet

Moin Uddin Shipon, former OC of Kotwali Model Police Station, has been arrested in connection with the killing of journalist ATM Turab in Sylhet during the student-mass movement.

The task force of BGB arrested him in a raid in Gopinathpur village of Madhavpur upazila of Habiganj district in the early hours of Monday (September 23).

It is reported that a team of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) raided the house of Gopinathpur Moin Uddin on the basis of the news that there is a stock of illegal weapons in the early hours of Monday. No weapons were found during the search of the house, but Moin Uddin was found and arrested. This campaign was led by the assistant director of 55 BGB. About this, Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Media Officer Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam said – Moin was attached to the Rajshahi Range DIG office by OSD from Sylhet Kotwali police station after August 5. But nothing is known about what he was doing at home.

Journalist ATM Turab was shot dead by the police at Bandar Bazar in Sylhet on July 19 during the movement of students and people demanding the fall of Sheikh Hasina. A month after the incident, the brother of the deceased, Abul Ahsan. Azraf (Zabur) filed a case in Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on August 19. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal was made the main accused in this case. 18 people, including the police, were named as accused in the statement. 200 to 250 people were made unknown accused.

Accused number 2 of the case is – Additional Deputy Commissioner (Crime North) Md. Sadek Dastgir Kausar, Accused No. 3 Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Azbahar Ali Sheikh, Accused No. 4 Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali) Mizanur Rahman and Accused No. 6 Moin Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station at that time.
The other accused are Kallol Goswami, in-charge of Bandarbazar outpost under Sylhet’s Kotwali model police station, former Inspector (Investigation) Fazlur Rahman, police station SI Kazi Ripon Sarkar, president of the Metropolitan Volunteer League and former councilor of Ward No. 7 of CSIC, Aftab Uddin, vice-president of the District Volunteer League. Piyush Kanti Dey, Sylhet City Corporation PRO Sajlu Lashkar, Govt College Chhatra League President and CCIC Ward No. 32 Councilor Ruhel Ahmad, District Chhatra League Former Organizing Secretary Sajal Das Anik, Chalibandar Nehar Manzil resident Shiblu Ahmad (Md. Ruhul Amin), SMP Constable Salim Mia, Azhar and Feroze.

It is mentioned in the declaration that the Awami League miscreants supported by the fascist Hasina government and the amateur police and miscreants of the illegal government have committed the heinous incidents. Accused in a completely planned alliance, the innocent younger brother of the plaintiff, journalist Abu Taher Md. Turab (ATM Turab) was killed. The murder took place in the afternoon in front of hundreds of people. Accused No. 2 to 5 threatened to kill the plaintiff when the case was filed. Later, the accused misused state influence and power and took the plaintiff to Dhaka to meet the former prime minister.

On the other hand, five days after the incident Turab’s family filed a complaint at Kotwali police station accusing 8-10 policemen. However, the police did not accept it as a case.
The police said at that time – they have already filed a case against 34 people of BNP and Jamaat and accused hundreds of others. So they recorded the complaint filed by Turab’s brother as a general diary. It was later learned that the police statement did not mention the shooting death. Besides, they did not arrest anyone in this police case for 1 month. Therefore Turab’s family was forced to approach the court.
