Due to heavy rains and water coming down from upstream, the water of Manu and Kushiara rivers is flowing over the border in Moulvibazar. At 9 am on Tuesday, Manu river water was flowing above 10 cm at Chandnighat near Manu Bridge in the city and Kushiara river water was flowing 7 cm at Sherpur of Sadar upazila.
On Tuesday (July 2) morning, Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila’s Hamarkona area of Khalilpur Union, the Kushiara water overflowed the defense dam and entered the township. There is no permanent defense dam of Kushiara in this area. The rural road has been used as a defense embankment. As a result of the new erosion, the surrounding villages have been flooded.
According to the Water Development Board (PUBO) and local sources, water started rising in various rivers of the district including Manu, Kushiara in Moulvibazar from Monday night. The water level of Manu river was 9.63 cm below the danger mark at 6 pm on Monday near Manu Setu in Moulvibazar town. At the same place on Tuesday morning, 10 cm above the danger line was flowing. On the other hand, in Sherpur of Sadar Upazila, at 6 pm on Monday, the water level of Kushiara river was 8.49 centimeters or below the danger level. At nine o’clock on Tuesday morning, water was flowing seven centimeters above the danger line. As the water level of Kushiara river has increased, water is overflowing the dam in various parts of Sherpur in Khalilpur union of Sadar upazila. Meanwhile, the defense embankment near the Hamrakona mosque was breached on Tuesday morning. As a result, water is entering the village. The water of Dhalai River is flowing below the Bipatsima. The water of Juri River has been flowing over the border for many days. At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, the water of Juri river was flowing 179 cm above the water line.
On Tuesday morning, it was seen that 15 to 20 feet area was broken in Hamarkona area of Khalilpur Union. Water is entering the village through that broken part. Local people said that if the water flow is not stopped, parts of Hamarkona, Brahmangram and Sherpur market will be flooded. According to Paubo Moulvibazar office sources, Paubo has no dam in the area where Kushiara river breaks the dam and enters the village. Once a defense embankment, it is now mainly a rural road belonging to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). When the water in the Kushiara river rises above the flood limit, the dam breaks and water enters the area.
Paubo Moulvibazar Executive Engineer Md. Javed Iqbal told Morningsun, “The rise of water in Kushiara is scary. If the water in Kushiara increases, the water in Manu will not decrease. In the Khalilpur area of the Kushiara River, there is no permanent embankment in the village. Water is entering Khalilpur Union after breaking the road of LGED in Hamarkona. I have sent 1000 synthetic bags filled with sand to repair the broken ones.
