A vendor flees after leaving a basket of banned sakar fish in Srimangal, Moulvibazar.
On Tuesday night, journalist Nur Mohammad Sagar called the Upazila Fisheries Office after seeing the basket of fish on the side of the road on Post Office Road in Srimangal town. Upon receiving the news, officials from the Fisheries Office came and confirmed that these were banned sakar fish. The fish were seized and brought to the Fisheries Office.
Bijoy, a night watchman on duty in the alley next to the Post Office Road, said that someone dumped the fish here with a plastic bag yesterday afternoon. The fish came to everyone’s attention after all the shops closed at night. Later, everyone gathered.
Srimangal Upazila Fisheries Officer Binoy Kumar Roy said that after receiving the news, the Fisheries Office sent people to seize the fish. They will be buried. Sakar fish is banned in the country. This fish creates a barrier to fish reproduction by eating the eggs and larvae of native fish species. This species of fish can survive in any environment and due to its rapid reproduction, it competes with native fish species for food and habitat. The fish is not edible.
