A young man was beaten to death by making him drink water mixed with lime and sand in Gowainghat, Sylhet, on charges of stealing cows. The gruesome incident took place on Tuesday (December 24) afternoon in the Jaflong tea garden of Madhya Jaflong Union of the upazila.
The deceased has been identified as Helal Mia (32) of Datari village of Doubari Union.
It is learnt that on Tuesday afternoon, Mosharraf Hossain, son of Monir Mia of Islampur Gangpar village, Amir Uddin, Salam, son of Abdul Khalik and their associates arrested Helal on charges of stealing cows in the Madhya Jaflong tea garden. Later, they tied him to a tree, beat him severely and made him drink about one liter of water mixed with lime and sand. At one point, when Helan fell unconscious, he was taken to the Madhya Jaflong Union Office. Helal was kept there overnight and tortured.
Upon receiving the news, Helal’s relatives rescued him unconscious from the Madhya Jaflong Union Office early on Wednesday (December 25) and took him to the hospital, but he died on the way. On the way to the hospital, Hela vomited profusely and his body was bleeding profusely, his family members said.
Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased have questioned the role of the police. They allege that Helal died due to police negligence.
In this regard, Gowainghat Police Station S. I. Prabhakar Barua said that he went to rescue Helal after receiving the news on Tuesday evening. However, the locals told him that Helal Uddin would be handed over to his family. Then he left Helal at the scene.
The family members say that if the police had rescued Helal on time, he might have survived. There is a lot of negligence on the part of the police in this. Meanwhile, accused Mosharraf said – I did not beat him. The people of the area beat him, I was just at the scene.
Confirming the truth of this matter, Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sarkar Tofail Ahmed said – It is initially believed that Helal died due to excessive beating and feeding him water mixed with lime and sand. The body of the deceased has been sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy. If a case is filed by the family, further legal action will be taken.
