People of Paschim Balipara and Haripur villages of Fatepur Union No. 5 in Jaintapur, Sylhet have retained the tradition of their ancestors. Every year, the villagers celebrate the Polo Bawa festival at Baor Doar Beel as an old tradition during the winter season. But this time, after two years, the festival was celebrated on the first Tuesday of the month of Falgun (February 18) in the middle of the winter season.

In advance to participate in it, hundreds of people from the two villages gathered on the banks of the beel from the morning with polos made of bas and beth. As soon as the clock struck 12, people jumped into the water of the beel with polos. At this time, many people hunted various types of fish including large bowal, rui, katla, ayar and shoal fish.

Abdur Rakib, a village elder and U/P member, told The Daily Morning Sun that for more than a hundred years, the Polo Bawa festival has been celebrated in that beel every winter according to the date given by their ancestors. He said that the beel is the property of their two villages. As a result, they catch naturally born fish.

The joy of the Polo Bawa festival is a little more among young children than the young and old. They come to see this festival holding the hands of their parents, uncles, grandfathers, maternal uncles, and brothers.

Meanwhile, to see this Polo Bawa festival, people from Jaintapur-Goainghat-Kanaighat upazilas from far and wide rush to the banks of the Baor Doar beel in groups from early morning.

After fishing for fish in this hour-long Polo Bawa festival, the people of the two villages happily returned home with the fish.
