A 3-day fish fair is underway in Srimangal, Moulvibazar, on the occasion of Paush Sankranti. Vendors have brought local fish species from haors, beels and rivers to the fair. Among them, large Rui, Boal and Chital fish are attracting the attention of buyers and visitors.
Although the fair started from Tuesday, the main market will start on Wednesday. On Tuesday afternoon, a Boal fish was sold for 65,000 taka at the Paush Sankranti fish fair at Srimangal Fish Market. This 40 kg Boal fish was brought to the market by fish trader Rohit Mia. He priced the huge Boal fish at 90,000 taka. At one point, Misba Uddin, a Dubai expatriate from Uttarsur village of Srimangal, bargained and bought the fish for 55,000 taka.
In addition to large Rui, Ir, Katal, Chital, Boal, Mrigel, and carp fish, various species of small domestic fish have arrived in the market. This fish fair in Srimangal is also selling well.
Md. Kasem Mia, who came to the fair, said, “A lot of fish have arrived at the fair. However, these fish are for the rich. We are just looking. If we can find any fish within our means, we will buy it.”
Another buyer, Liton Shil, said that buying big fish at the Poush Sankranti fair has become a tradition. That is why I come to the market at this special time.
Md. Akhter Hossain, Joint General Secretary of the Srimangal Businessmen’s Association, told The Daily Morning Sun that big fish are brought to the market on the occasion of Poush Sankranti. However, the supply of fish is slightly less at this fair compared to last year. A crowd of buyers and visitors has been observed at this festive fish fair. The fair will continue till tomorrow, Wednesday.
