Poet and journalist Soumitra Deb (55) has died. He was taken to a private hospital in the capital around 9 am on Tuesday when he felt unwell. However, the doctor on duty at the emergency department said that he died before being brought to the hospital.
Soumitra Deb’s wife Paula Deb confirmed this information. She said that her husband had been suffering from breathing problems for a few days. He suddenly felt quite unwell on Tuesday morning. Then he was quickly taken to a private hospital in the Khilkhet area. Doctors said that he died on the way.
Soumitra Deb’s journalistic career began by writing for local newspapers in Sylhet and Moulvibazar. Later, he wrote as a contributor to Prothom Alo. After that, he joined the Daily Manabjamin as an assistant editor. After working in this position for a few years, he has been serving as the editor-in-chief of the online newspaper RedTimes bd.com since 2009.
In addition to journalism, Soumitra Deb regularly wrote poems, short stories, and essays. He has published more than 30 books. He received the Bangladesh Writers Foundation Award for poetry in 2005. His notable poetry books are Ajabithi, Neel Krishnachura, Pathar Chokh, etc. He also acted.
Soumitra Deb was born on July 27, 1970 in Moulvibazar. After graduating from the National University, he earned a master’s degree in journalism from the Bangladesh Press Institute.
