A large amount of illegal Indian goods including sugar, malt, raisins, basmati rice and cosmetics have been seized in a special operation by the Sylhet Army.
These goods were recovered from Lama Shyampur in Jaintapur Upazila and Had village in Gowainghat Upazila in two separate operations conducted at 11 am on Wednesday (March 19).
It is learned that the army patrol team led by Captain Mahmud-bin-Mahfuz Saif of the Army’s Infantry Regiment 27 Bir Unit at the Haripur Gasfield Army Camp in Jaintapur Upazila conducted an operation in Lama Shyampur and Had village areas of Gowainghat in Fatehpur Union No. 5.
During the operation, 510 kg of Indian raisins, 27,600 kg of Indian sugar, 195 kg of malta, 3,648 pieces of foreign face wash and 5,370 kg of Indian basmati rice were recovered from several godowns. The owners of the smuggled goods fled after being alerted to the operation.
During the operation, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Rajan Deb of Jaintapur Model Police Station took part in the operation in Lama Shyampur area.
The estimated market value of the seized goods is said to be more than 62 lakh taka.
Out of the recovered goods, 2,000 kg of sugar has been handed over to Gowainghat Police Station and 5,300 kg of basmati rice and about 3,000 kg of sugar to Jaintapur Model Police Station. In addition, the remaining recovered goods have been handed over to Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB).
As of the writing of this report, legal action was in the process of being taken as per the rules.
