Sylhet, Staff Reporter //
Allegations of harassment of two journalists have been received in Sylhet. A group of cyber-criminals are spreading rumors on various social media platforms, sometimes calling them devils and sometimes Awami League allies.
After investigation, it was learned that one of them is Humayun Kabir, deputy editor of the weekly Sylhet Alo, central vice chairman of Bangladesh Reporters Society and member of Sylhet City Press Club. The other is Mahtab, editor and publisher of the Daily Haoranchal newspaper in Sunaganj district, and bureau chief of the Daily Nithirat newspaper.
Cyber-criminals are taking different paths to harass these two people, including various lawsuits. The anti-discrimination student movement has continued its attempts to get involved in the case. In addition, some alleged hooligans are spreading false propaganda and rumors on various social media platforms including online news portals, damaging their reputation, the sources concerned have confirmed.
According to sources, before the fall of the autocratic Awami League, the two journalists had published several reports of irregularities and corruption against the top corrupt former member of parliament (MP) Ratan. To cover up the consequences, a person allegedly filed a case against Mahtab under the Digital Information Technology Act on Ratan’s behalf. Those friends are trying to fish in troubled waters again to discredit the interim Yunus government. They are trying to portray these incidents in a different light to their own interests.
Meanwhile, on December 18, journalist Md. Humayun Kabir filed a written complaint with the Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner to get rid of the harassment case. He demanded a remedy and mentioned in the complaint that an attempt is being made to tarnish his reputation by distorting his name and writing it as Bandook Kabir. On the other hand, cyber criminals are spreading rumors and conspiring against journalist Mahtab in the same way. The masked Awami League cronies of the past are still beyond the reach of the law.
When journalist Humayun Kabir was contacted on his mobile phone to inquire about this, he told the reporter that in addition to his journalism career, he is working in a business shop. He himself is unable to understand who or what is doing these things for what purpose. However, he said that he is working to prevent them.
A member of Mahtab’s family, who did not want to be named, said on his mobile phone that after publishing news against some corrupt leaders during the Awami League government, their family started being harassed. Even in the present time, those cronies are following the same path. At this time, he demanded redress and sought the attention of the higher authorities of the administration to establish justice.
