There is huge potential for cultivating Sultan maize commercially in Srimangal, Moulvibazar. Farmers have obtained good yields by cultivating maize in some areas of the upazila. Farmers have succeeded in cultivating Hybrid Sultan maize with the help of Laltin, Kazi Farm and the local agricultural office in Mirzapur Union of Srimangal Upazila of the district.

Other farmers are showing interest in cultivating it as the yield of maize is good after cultivating it for the first time. Farmers complain that cultivation is being hampered due to water scarcity. Maize farmers believe that the yield will be even better if adequate water is provided.
Hybrid Sultan maize can be cultivated at a rate of 2 kg per bigha. It can be cultivated twice a year. It can be cultivated in September, October and June, July every year.

Laltin Seed’s Sylhet Divisional Officer Tapash Chakraborty said that this is the first time that hybrid Sultan maize has been experimentally cultivated in Srimangal. The cost of production in Sultan maize cultivation is very limited. Its yield has also been good. But there is a shortage of sufficient water. If there is proper water supply, there is a huge potential for maize cultivation in this upazila. He said that hybrid Sultan maize cultivation will also yield good yields in fallow lands where rice and vegetables are not cultivated.

Srimangal Upazila Agriculture Officer Mohammad Alauddin said that the soil and climate of Srimangal are suitable for maize cultivation. Experimental maize cultivation in Mirzapur has yielded good yields. Any problems of the farmers will be solved.

Moulvibazar Agricultural Extension Department Deputy Director Md. Jalal Uddin said that maize cultivation has added a new dimension to district agriculture. This year, maize is being cultivated on 255 hectares of land in the district. The production target is 9 tons per hectare. We are expecting a crop of 2,295 tons or more.

Nilufar Yasmin Monalisa Sweety, Additional Deputy Director (Plant Protection) of the Moulvibazar Department of Agricultural Extension, said that corn is one of the cash crops in Bangladesh. The crop can be harvested in just 150 days after planting. It requires less water for cultivation and can be cultivated on fallow land. Corn grains are used as human food and corn plants and green leaves are used as high-quality cattle feed. Corn is also in great demand as food for cows, poultry and fish.
