Accused of murder case committed suicide in Sylhet jail

An accused in a murder case in Sylhet’s central jail committed suicide by tying a lungi around his neck. However, the jail authorities claimed that he was mentally ill.

The deceased has been identified as Fazal Amin (58), son of Drimon Khan of Nishchintpur village of Madhyanagar police station of Sunamganj district.

The incident took place on Friday (August 30) around 4:30 pm.

It is known that Fazal Amin was transferred from Sunamganj to Sylhet Central Jail on August 3. He was brought here for treatment due to his mental condition. Amin’s murder was number-39/24. When he tried to commit suicide by tying his lungi around his neck in the jail on Friday afternoon, the jail authorities quickly rescued him and sent him to Osmani Hospital. After being taken there, the doctor on duty in the emergency department declared him dead.

Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital Deputy Director Soumitra Chakraborty has confirmed this. He said the exact cause of his death will be known after the post-mortem.
