It has been alleged that a person who is not involved in the incidents of students’ movement in Sylhet’s Golapganj is being harassed. Sunday (September 8) at 2:30 p.m
Amena Begum, the victim’s mother, raised this allegation in a press conference at the Sylhet district press club. Amena’s brother Rashid Mia read the written statement on his behalf.
In the written statement, it is said that on August 4, students clashed with the police, BGB and Awami League and its affiliates in various places including Dhaka South Market of Golapganj for the one-point demand of Sheikh Hasina’s downfall. 6 people were killed and several hundreds were injured in the day-long clashes at various places including Golapganj town center.
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina, one case after another was filed in the court and police station in the events of that day. In 3 of these cases, Maulana Abdul Qadir, son of deceased Chan Mia of West Dharabehar village of Kadmarsul area of Golapganj, has been made an accused purposely. One out of 3 was a murder case. However, due to the application in the court, Qadir has been released from that case. He is still accused in the remaining two cases. Before Maulana Abdul Qadi used to lead various mosques. Now he has a business in Dhaka South Bazaar.
In the press conference, Rashid Mia stated the reason for harassing him as an accused in these cases – There is an old dispute with Qadir’s family regarding the land of Yakub Ahmad, Bilal Ahmad, Zubair Ahmad and Kabir Ahmad, sons of Abdus Shahid of East Barkot area of the upazila. As a result, on the night of July 18, 2022, Qadir was on his way home from his business, when Yakub and his brothers ambushed him. Qadir and his cousin Abdul Qayyum were seriously injured. Later, a case was filed in the police station and the case is under trial in the court.
The court has fixed the argument of the case on September 25. On this date, to prevent the plaintiff Maulana Qadir from appearing in the court and occupying the house and place, Yakub and his brothers contacted the plaintiff of the student-movement incidents and put pressure on Qadir in several cases.
Maulana Abdul Qadir’s mother Amena Begum has expressed her hope to get justice by drawing the attention of the higher authorities of the police and the court.
