Baniachong Upazila Jubo League president Md. accused of 9 murder cases in the anti-discrimination student movement. Rekhash Mia has been arrested.
The police arrested him from Jatrapasha Mahalla of Upazila Sadar yesterday afternoon. Rekhash Mia Jatrapasha Mahallan is the son of late Lal Mohammad and former chairman of South West Union Parishad (UP).
Baniachong Police Station Deputy Inspector (SI) Jahangir Alam confirmed the arrest to The Daily Morning Sun and said that Rekhash Mia has been arrested in the nine murder case in the student movement. Later he was handed over to the court from the police station.
According to the police, on August 5, the anti-discrimination student movement took out a procession from Sagardighi’s west side Eidgah ground. At the end of Ganninganj Bazar round, thousands of people gathered at Barabazar Martyr’s Minar. Later, when the angry people went in front of the police station with a procession, they had an argument with the police. At one point, the agitators started throwing bricks at the police.
Witnesses said that police fired rubber bullets, tear gas shells, sound grenades during the incident. Seven people, including four, were killed on the spot by police firing. A journalist was beaten to death by angry mobs while trying to take pictures. After that, the enraged crowd snatched Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury and beat him to death. Another person who was shot died in hospital the next day. The death toll is nine. Two separate cases were filed by the family of the nine people killed in the incident and by the police in the case of SI Santosh’s murder.
