Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has stated that the government is maintaining a strict stance regarding the law and order situation across the country, including in Chattogram. He made these remarks to reporters on Wednesday afternoon following a special exchange meeting with relevant officials at the Chattogram Circuit House.

Presided over by Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Md. Jahidul Islam Mian, the meeting was attended by Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Members of Parliament Sarwar Jamal Nizam, Ershad Ullah, Sayed Al Noman, and Jasim Uddin, Chattogram Police Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali, District Superintendent of Police Md. Masud Alam, and senior officials from various government departments.

Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie said, “Today’s meeting regarding the law and order situation was very important. We discussed various issues with the concerned officials, including the state of law and order in different areas, incidents of mugging, robbery, theft, and snatching, as well as the stockpiling of illegal weapons and the spread of narcotics. I also gathered information from the field level. Several decisions have been taken after consulting with those responsible for these matters. All necessary steps are being taken to improve the law and order situation so that ordinary people can live and move about normally.”

The Minister added, “Chattogram is one of the country’s most important business cities and economic zones. Stricter measures are being taken regarding issues such as hill cutting and illegal sand extraction. We are tackling these situations very firmly. Steps are being taken with a focus on enabling ordinary people to lead normal lives. We are prioritizing every issue. Our special focus will be on immediately addressing, coordinating, and resolving matters wherever and whenever necessary.”

The Water Resources Minister mentioned that necessary development activities are underway with a special focus on Chattogram. He said, “You have seen that new laws have been enacted and existing laws amended in Parliament regarding many issues. I would not claim that a trend established over 17 years can be completely reversed in just 17 days or 17 months; however, we have noble initiatives in place.” “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tareq Rahman, we have shouldered our responsibilities to tackle all situations and have undertaken numerous initiatives to improve the country’s law and order—specifically within the Chattogram district and city.”

Regarding the Awami League, the Minister stated, “The Awami League is a banned political party. They are attempting to create instability in society by staging ‘hit-and-run’ (flash) processions in various locations. These attempts to incite unrest through such processions will be countered both politically and administratively. At the same time, everyone remains vigilant regarding the necessary legal actions to be taken against them; those responsible for maintaining law and order will take appropriate measures as required.”
