File Photo. The overall law and order situation in Jaintapur, Sylhet, has improved significantly. The police are working to curb crime through strict surveillance. Apart from a few isolated unpleasant incidents, no major conflicts have been observed, and instances of irregularities and corruption have declined. These findings were confirmed during an on-the-ground investigation. Although a conflict arose between two factions over establishing dominance in the border area, the situation was quickly brought under control through the intervention of Mahbubur Rahman Molla, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jaintapur Model Police Station. The Jaintapur police have earned a positive reputation for this; many ordinary citizens have taken to social media—specifically Facebook—to express their gratitude and thanks to OC Mahbubur Rahman and the officers on duty. The OC himself sustained injuries while trying to quell the conflict; the incident occurred on the morning of September 4 in the Ghilatail area of ​​the upazila.

The local police are maintaining strict vigilance to halt extortion activities along the Jaintapur border and river routes. The local police administration is working continuously in coordination with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) to eliminate extortion.

Meanwhile, under the guidance of Ariful Haque Choudhury—Member of Parliament for Sylhet-4 and Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment as well as Labour and Employment—the police are adopting a “zero-tolerance” policy to combat smuggling. The Sylhet District Superintendent of Police is also adhering to this same policy. The police administration is maintaining strict surveillance to prevent human trafficking as well. They are conducting regular joint operations alongside the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to curb smuggling and drug-related activities.

On-the-ground observations reveal that the Jaintapur Model Police are assisting traffic police in maintaining order and preventing accidents on the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway. In particular, OC Mahbubur Rahman is working tirelessly, day and night, to suppress these crimes. He is being actively supported by Salman Noor, the Circle Officer in charge of the Jaintapur-Kanaighat area. Meanwhile, a certain group was recently seen blockading the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway; the local police played a pivotal role in having that blockade lifted. Subsequently, the situation was restored to normalcy with the assistance of the local police station. To enhance administrative oversight, the Upazila administration regularly conducts monthly law and order committee meetings. The administration also continues to run public awareness campaigns aimed at eradicating smuggling and drug abuse. In short, surpassing all past records, the Jaintapur Model Police are successfully prioritizing public safety. However, it is a curious fact that a powerful, unscrupulous syndicate—denied the special privileges they once enjoyed—has resorted to spreading baseless propaganda against the police on Facebook. Certain unscrupulous individuals posing as journalists are publishing unfounded reports in obscure online media outlets, alleging extortion by police personnel without providing any concrete evidence. This tarnishes the reputation of the Jaintapur police. Among them, a few “yellow journalists”—seeking favors from smuggling and drug kingpins—are maliciously spreading rumors that law and order is deteriorating due to police actions; in reality, they are envious of the police’s effective work in curbing these illicit trades. They used to regularly extort large sums of money from various illegal hotspots. Now, thanks to the police’s courageous raids and crime-eradication efforts, their lucrative extortion racket is on the verge of collapse. Enraged by this, they target the police to mask their own criminal activities, believing that if they can oust honest and competent officers, they can return to their former illicit practices.

In this era of information technology, purveyors of misinformation are highly active and well-organized across various platforms. Leveraging social media, fake news websites, and deepfake technology, they rapidly disseminate false or misleading information. Whether the goal is to incite social and state unrest, gain political advantage, or serve commercial interests, the Jaintapur police remain steadfast in their principled stance against such misinformation. Speaking on the matter via mobile phone, the Officer-in-Charge of Jaintapur Model Police Station stated that no one—whether a member of the general public or a police officer—would be spared if found engaging in irregularities or corruption. He urged those sharing opinions on platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and blogs to publish accurate information, noting that doing so facilitates the administration’s work. He emphasized that spreading misinformation does not serve the nation’s best interests and sought everyone’s cooperation in this regard.

Meanwhile, a relevant source has confirmed that intelligence surveillance has been intensified compared to the past. Strict monitoring is underway regarding those who spread rumors, and intelligence agencies remain on high alert.
