Justice Syed Refat Ahmed has been appointed as the 25th Chief Justice of the country. The appointment was made by the President under Article 95(1) of the Constitution on Saturday night. This appointment will be effective from the date of taking oath.
He will succeed the outgoing Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan as the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. Justice Syed Refat Ahmed was a senior judge of the High Court Division. He is the son of late barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed, advisor during the caretaker government.
Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed served as an advisor to the caretaker government in 1996 and 2001. He served as the third Attorney General of Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, after the Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan moved away in the face of the movement, Md. The news of making Ashfaqul Islam acting chief justice was “rejected” by the agitators. Later it was found that the information on appointment of Acting Judge was ‘misleading’.
Later, an ultimatum was given by the anti-discrimination student movement to appoint Justice Syed Refat Ahmed as the Chief Justice of the High Court Division.
The students gave this ultimatum from the program at Shiksha Chatwar in the capital on Saturday evening.
Abu Bakr Majumder, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, said, “We have given time till 9 am tomorrow.” If Syed Rifat Ahmed is not appointed as Chief Justice, we will announce a strict program.
