A huge quantity of 940 kg of illegally imported sugar has been seized in a raid by the District Detective Branch (DB) police in Moulvibazar. Two people involved in the incident were arrested during the raid.
On Monday (January 20) night, 188 sacks of sugar weighing 50 kg were seized from inside a freight truck from the Kalargaon passenger camp area of Khalilpur Union in Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila. During this, DB members arrested two people named Yasin Ali (25) and Rifat Hasan Dipu (22).
District Detective Branch SI Mahmudur Rahman said, based on a secret tip-off, we searched a truck coming from Sylhet. We seized a truck with a total of 9,400 kg of sugar in 188 sacks weighing 50 kg from the scene.
The estimated market value of the seized sugar is around Tk 12 lakh.
He said that the sugar smuggling gang was collecting sugar from the Jaintapur border area of Sylhet district and taking it to Comilla for sale. They were trying to smuggle sugar by arranging stones on the sugar to evade the police.
Officer-in-charge of the Moulvibazar District Detective Branch Abul Kashem Sarkar said that the two arrested for illegally importing Indian goods into Bangladesh by evading customs through smuggling are residents of Jaintapur police station area of Sylhet. A complaint has been filed against them at Moulvibazar Sadar police station under Section 25 (B)/D of the Special Powers Act of 1974.
