Farmer Abutaher has seen the face of success by growing gourd in Aai village of Bhunbir union of Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar. Abutaher spent 25 thousand rupees on 15 percent of his land and cultivated gourds. From that land, he has sold gourds worth one lakh rupees so far. Abutaher expects to sell 10/15 thousand more gourds from the amount of gourds that are available in the market even though the price has decreased a little.
Abutaher Mia said that the yield of gourd has been good this year. He also benefited from good prices in the market. By selling each piece of gourd at Tk 50/60 in the wholesale market, he has sold over Tk 100,000 so far. He got 75,000 rupees in addition to his original profit. He hopes to be able to sell 10/15 thousand more gourds from the amount of gourds that he still has.
Farmer Abutaher also said that he is not able to cultivate vegetables on a large scale due to the small amount of land and low capital. However, if he gets government support from the agriculture department, he will benefit and in the future, he will cultivate winter vegetables including gourd in a larger area.
