The Election Reform Commission has recommended eliminating the possibility of running for more than one seat in the National Assembly elections, canceling the election for that seat if 40 percent of the vote is not received in any seat, and holding new elections in that seat if the number of ‘no’ votes is higher in any seat.
The commission has also recommended introducing provisions such as a maximum two-term term for the Prime Minister, disqualifying a person elected as Prime Minister twice for the post of President, and preventing the same person from being the party chief, Prime Minister and Leader of Parliament at the same time.
The recommendation proposes increasing the number of seats in the National Assembly by 100 to 400. Of which 100 seats are reserved for women. The reform commission has also proposed introducing a provision for the election of the President by the votes of members of both houses in a bicameral parliament.
In addition, the reform commission has made recommendations such as setting the term of the caretaker government at four months and abolishing EVMs in elections. The Election Reform Commission has also recommended allowing expatriate voters to vote through postal ballots and introducing an online voting system.
At a press conference on Wednesday (January 15) evening, the head of the Electoral Reforms Commission, Badiul Alam Majumder, said that the Electoral Reforms Commission has made 150 recommendations in a total of 16 areas.
